Wheelchair Marathon
Last Sunday was the London Marathon, renowned the world over, but what is not as well publicised is the wheelchair marathon. The London Marathon runs a separate race and results for wheelchair users as well as runners.
Wheelchair entrants to the London Marathon must have completed a marathon before and expect to complete the race in less than three hours.
This year, the men’s wheelchair marathon was won by a British gentleman called David Weir. David completed the marathon in just one hour and 33 minutes. It was an exciting finish as there were seven athletes who didn’t separate until the end. David has now won the London Marathon wheelchair race three times in a row with his sprint finish. This was his fourth win in total.
The women’s wheelchair marathon was won by a lady from Switzerland called Sandra Graf. Sandra won the marathon with a time of just one hour and 48 minutes. This was her debut in the race and her time broke the world record, previously set in 1997 by Swedish entrant Monica Wetterstrom with one hour 48 minutes and 4 seconds.
