Polling Plan For Disabled
The Northern Ireland Electoral Office is putting together a disability polling plan to make it easier for those with a disability to vote.
It has published a request for information from anyone who has had trouble using a polling station. Chief Electoral Officer, Douglas Bain, says:
“I am committed to do all that I can to make voting as straightforward as possible for everyone who wants to have their say in how we are governed. I am now inviting any member of the public, especially those with disabilities, who may have had difficulty using their polling station at the last election, to let me know. All responses should clearly identify the polling station involved. I will personally consider all suggestions received.”
People have until the 11th July to respond to the consultation process.
Potential plans could include having alternative polling stations for those suffering from a qualifying disability and if that goes ahead, it would be the first plan of its kind within the UK. The Chief Electoral Officer is able to relocate polling stations if they are unsuitable or unavailable.
